1 John 3:1 – “See what kind of love the Father has given to us in that we should be called God’s children, and that is what we are!”
Every child in every family deserves to feel loved, welcomed, valued and included — especially at church. We at FirstShreveport want everyone to enjoy worship, Sunday School, activities, service and fellowship. With that in mind, we strive to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to feel comfortable and successful in every aspect of church life. We consider it a privilege and a direct call from God to reach out to the families who have children with special needs.
- To show families of children with special needs that we believe that each child is a unique creation of God.
- To reach out to the community and provide a safe and loving environment where children with disabilities can worship and learn about God and His precious son.
- To nurture each child’s individual skills and abilities while learning about the Christian faith.
GEMs hopes to achieve this in a variety of ways.
Sunday School and all activities such as, camps, VBS, events children may participate in the grade-level classes independently or with a “buddy.”
GEMs Night Out Children with special needs and siblings are invited to a fun night at the church while their parents or guardians enjoy a night out to rest, run errands, or have a special date night. GNO is offered monthly on the second Friday of the school months.
Young at Heart GEMs Presently, FUMC invites adults with special needs to a YAH GEMs Dinner and Dance Night. This event included dinner, games, gift card walk, dance, and snacks.
Please take our special needs assessment to see how your child would best be served by the FirstShreveport family by being a part of GEMs.
If you have any questions about GEMs or their events, email Mrs. Billie, director of nursery, preschool and special needs ministries.

Volunteers with GEMs
Thank you for committing your time to our GEMs Ministry. We currently need “buddies” for Sunday School, summer camps, and VBS. Buddies are adult and youth volunteers who are matched with a child with special needs so that they can be included and participate with their same-age peers. Volunteers are also needed for our GEMs Night Out and YAH GEMs Dinner and Dance events. Youth and adults assist in many ways, but the most important way is to make this night the most fun event that they have ever had.
