deaf logodDeaf Community exists to support the Deaf and Hard of Hearing living in the Ark-La-Tex through Friday evening socials, leadership opportunities, serving in the community, worship, Bible study and more. While dDeaf community is a ministry of First United Methodist Church, one need not be a member to participate. All are welcome!

We have an ASL-interpreted worship service in our sanctuary at 11:00 am every Sunday. This service is televised live with closed captioning on KTBS channel 3. (Occasionally the broadcast switches to digital channel 3.3.) All services in the Sanctuary have Listening Devices available. We also provide ASL-interpreted communion at 12 noon in Couch Chapel each Sunday upon request.

Being a part of the Deaf Community of First United Methodist Church By Evon Malray-Cain

My friend and colleague, Peggy Gray, was providing interpreting services for the morning worship service when I began attending First Methodist in 2010. Shortly after, Kay Henderson and Brenda Lazarus expressed a deep desire for more deaf people to experience Christian fellowship and have a place where they could gather to have fellowship and Bible study.  After meeting with our Associate Pastor, Rev. Lisa Turnbull, it came to light that more was needed than just a place to have fun.  Deaf people needed hope and encouragement. Parents of deaf children needed information and direction. Deaf people globally needed help, and mission work among the deaf was needed. All of these ideas led to the inception of creating Deaf Community.  Since that first meeting, the members and leaders of this group have sought to meet these needs and reach out to those in the deaf community who are underserved as well as provide a place for fellowship. I continue to try to share God’s love with the deaf, and offer open, warm, and inviting hospitality for anyone who wants to come. All are welcome.

Ways to be Involved

At First Shreveport we have many ways that the dDeaf, interpreters and signing/hearing can get involved. There are events to plan, volunteer at, and invite people to attend. You could teach a sign language class or go on a mission trip. If there’s something that you want to be a part of, let us know! We can definitely find a way to plug you in and get you connected. For additional information, you can email the church, Evon Malray (our Sunday worship ASL-interpreter).

Donate in memory of Kay

KHendersonKay Henderson was one of the founding leaders and members of the dDeaf Community group here at First Shreveport. In December of 2013, Kay Henderson went home to be with her Lord. In honor of Kay’s love for the deaf, her devotion to her family and friends, and her desire to share with others, the Kay Henderson Memorial Fund was established. The Kay Henderson Memorial Fund has been used to do what Kay loved the most: giving to those in need in her deaf community.

We recognize and remember Kay through our Kay Henderson Memorial Fund. The funds donated go to support the dDeaf Community’s socials and various missions.

If you decide to give through our secure online giving page, you will be given the option of where you would like your donation to go. The Kay Henderson Memorial Fund is one of those options. If you would like to mail your donation to us, please send it to
