The Columns – November

Our local missions program exists to care for people in a transformational way. To serve! I am so excited to partner with our incredible church community to serve God’s people.

I grew up in Magnolia, Arkansas, and attended Louisiana Tech University as an English education major. I followed a cute boy named Andy back to Shreveport, where I taught English at Byrd High, and have made this beautiful city my home since 1993. Andy and I married in 1996 and have two precious daughters Madeline and Mary, for whom I was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom for sixteen years. We love being involved in their schools and sports as well as spending time together enjoying the great outdoors boating, fishing, and hunting (I’m rarely coaxed along on the last one). I can often be found curled up with a great new novel, losing time in the words of my book. I love crafty projects, as long as no real talent is needed!

I believe that God, unbeknownst to me, has been training me, through my many volunteer opportunities and leadership positions, to lead First UMC in the right path for local missions. Our church is blessed with incredible people, facilities, and financial resources with which we can make a huge impact. As your Director of Local Missions, I hope to focus our scope of work in areas where we can establish relationships while serving the needs of our community. We will continue to financially support community partners through our grant program. And one of my main goals is to involve our membership in missions through meaningful projects which truly impact lives.

Our website will become a useful tool for connecting you to serving opportunities. Visit there often to see where your community needs you. This fall your serving team will be busy sorting through opportunities to support through our community programs funding. And our beautiful Christmas Day Love Feast will cap our year, serving Christmas cheer and Christ’s love to our neighbors. We would love for you to celebrate with us that day! Look for a fun and exciting calendar for 2016!

I will be visiting Sunday school classes and our ministry groups to support and celebrate the work you are already doing in our community and help you connect to new opportunities. Let me know where your group is plugged in and send me pictures! I am so joyous for the opportunity to serve with you!
